Ahead of the new season we caught up with our Under 21 captain Jay Smith and got his thoughts ahead of the big kick off.
A tough start to the preseason campaign saw the newly formed Under 21s struggle early on: “We started off slow and shakey with a few lads nervous but gelled together over the last couple of games. The mood of the lads is has a positive feeling and confident going into the season and that we can match anyone this season.”
Smith describes the positive impact back to back wins have had on the squad this week: “We have had two massive results one against our nearest rivals Witton with a clean sheet and only 2 shots on goal.”
On Saturday Aaron Kenyon’s men produced their best performance of the campaign to date with a 2-1 win against North West Counties Division One North side Atherton Laburnum Rovers, a performance that Smith was delighted with:
“To come back from going behind against a North west counties team away from home in tricky conditions proves we are on the right track.”
Smith added: “Our work ethic and our hard and gruelling pre season training with the 1st team is paying off.”
He added: “I can’t wait to get going against Stockport Town.”
The opening fixture takes place away to Stockport Town on Sunday the 11th of August with kick off at 2pm.
